POUNAMU WHĀNAU
Pounamu Whānau is a celebration of whānau, protection, strength, and the continuation of life through future generations.
At the heart of this artwork stand a tāne and wahine, representing the balance, partnership, and shared responsibilities that form the foundation of a strong whānau. The tāne carries a patu, standing as a protector and guardian of his loved ones. He symbolises courage, responsibility, and the commitment to safeguard those entrusted to his care.
Beside him stands the wahine, carrying new life within her. With her hands resting upon her puku, she represents nurturing, creation, and the sacred role of bringing future generations into the world. She embodies aroha, strength, and the enduring connection between whakapapa, whānau, and the generations yet to come.
Together, these figures reflect the importance of unity, support, and the roles we each play in protecting and nurturing our whānau. The artwork acknowledges the strength found within family and the responsibility of carrying forward the hopes, dreams, and legacy of our tūpuna.
Like pounamu itself, whānau are precious taonga — valued, protected, and passed from one generation to the next. This piece serves as a reminder of the importance of standing together, caring for one another, and honouring the whakapapa that connects us all.
