NGĀI TŪHOE – NGĀ TAMARIKI O TE KOHU
This artwork honours my Tūhoe whakapapa and the enduring connection between Maungapōhatu and Hinepūkohurangi, the purākau from which Tūhoe are often known as Ngā Tamariki o te Kohu – the Children of the Mist.
Inspired by the mist that descends upon the valleys of Te Urewera, this piece reflects the deep connection between people, place, and whakapapa. The story of Maungapōhatu and Hinepūkohurangi speaks of identity, belonging, and the ancestral ties that continue to guide and shape us today.
Growing up between Hawke's Bay and Waimana, the sight of the mist settling over the valley has always held special meaning for me. It serves as a reminder of my tūpuna, of home, and of the enduring presence of those who came before us. Maungapōhatu stands as a powerful symbol of strength, resilience, and beauty, deeply woven into the identity of Tūhoe.
This artwork is a reflection of my ongoing journey of learning and reconnecting with the stories, histories, and whakapapa of my people. It acknowledges my tūpuna, my whānau, and the generations who continue to carry the legacy of Tūhoe forward.
Bold and meaningful, this piece celebrates identity, whakapapa, and the unbreakable connection between people and whenua.
