Created in remembrance of one of our esteemed leaders, this artwork honours the legacy, vision, and enduring words of Kīngi Tūheitia. His message serves as a powerful reminder of the strength, resilience, and unity of Māori people, encouraging us to stand proudly in our identity and remain steadfast in who we are.
At the heart of the design is Te Kara o Te Whakaminenga o Ngā Hapū o Nu Tīreni, the flag of the United Tribes of Aotearoa. A symbol of unity, sovereignty, and collective purpose, Te Kara represents the aspirations of our people and the enduring importance of self-determination and rangatiratanga.
Flanking Te Kara are two pou, representing the faces of our tīpuna and rangatira whose leadership, wisdom, and vision continue to guide us today. They acknowledge those who upheld the mana of our people and whose commitment to protecting our whenua, culture, and rights remains an enduring source of inspiration.
The manu and taniwha within the design represent our kaitiaki — ancestral guardians who watch over us, offering guidance, protection, and strength. They remind us that we do not walk alone, but are supported by the wisdom, knowledge, and legacy of those who came before us.
