Kia mau ki tō Māoritanga - Hold fast to your Māori heritage.
This artwork is a celebration of Māori identity, resilience, and the enduring strength found in our whakapapa, culture, and connection to one another. It serves as a reminder to stand proudly in who we are and to remain firmly grounded in the values and traditions handed down through generations.
At the heart of the design is the Tino Rangatiratanga flag, created by Hiraina Marsden, Jan Dobson, and Linda Munn. The black represents Te Kore, the realm of potential and the space beyond the world of everyday experience. The white symbolises Te Ao Mārama, the world of light and understanding, while the red represents coming into being, life itself, and the connection to Papatūānuku, our earth mother. At the centre, the koru signifies growth, renewal, and the continual unfolding of life.
Standing alongside this kaupapa are two pou, guardians of our people who symbolise strength, protection, and the courage to challenge injustice. They represent the responsibility to stand firm, uphold our values, and advocate for the wellbeing of our whānau and communities.
Flanking the design are two taniwha, powerful kaitiaki who watch over and guide our people. They embody protection, wisdom, and guardianship, ensuring the safety, strength, and growth of present and future generations.
