The design features on the front of all kākahu, with the exception of the hoodie, where it is printed on the back to allow for a larger print area and greater visual impact.
ARERO
Arero is inspired by the importance of te reo Māori and the responsibility we all share in protecting, speaking, and passing it on to future generations.
This piece draws inspiration from the whakaaro shared by Kīngi Tūheitia Pōtatau Te Wherowhero VII regarding the significance of speaking our reo and ensuring it continues to thrive. It serves as a reminder that language is more than words - it carries our stories, whakapapa, identity, and connection to those who came before us.
At the centre of the artwork is a taiaha, symbolising the idea of holding your reo in your hands. Just as a taiaha is carried with purpose, skill, and respect, so too is te reo Māori. It is a taonga to be protected, nurtured, practised, and shared.
This artwork celebrates the strength of language and the power it has to connect people, preserve culture, and affirm identity. It acknowledges every person on their reo journey, whether they are fluent speakers, lifelong learners, or taking their first steps towards reconnecting with their language.
Bold and meaningful, this piece reflects TP Illustration and Design's commitment to creating artwork that honours culture, identity, and the enduring importance of te reo Māori.
